Attendants of drunk patient ‘attack’ junior doctor at east Delhi hospital

NEW DELHI: A junior doctor of the surgery department at Hedgewar Hospital in east Delhi’s Karkardooma was allegedly assaulted by attendants of a patient who visited the emergency room on Sunday.
The alleged assault occurred after the patient reportedly got involved in a fight outside the hospital premises.
The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr AM Rathore, could not be reached for a statement.Despite attempts to contact her via phone and messages, she remained unavailable. Dr. Mohd Nadeem, a senior resident of the internal medicine department, said the patient arrived in the emergency department around 12 pm, seeking treatment for injuries he had suffered during an altercation. He was taken to the dressing room, where a junior doctor and a dresser were present to suture his wounds. However, the patient, who was under the influence of alcohol, was uncooperative.
The doctor requested the patient to calm down, but the patient allegedly became agitated and began shouting and abusing the doctor. At this point, the patient’s attendants, who were waiting outside, entered the room. They started shouting, and one of them slapped the doctor. The attendants began beating up both the doctor and the dresser.
After the incident was reported to the duty casualty medical officer (CMO), a violence against doctor form was filled. “Yesterday, we gave a complaint to CMO and the medical superintendent and requested for an institutional FIR,” Dr. Nadeem said.
A case has been filed under Sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty), and 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of functions) of BNS. A case has been registered under Delhi Medical Services Personnel and Medicare Services Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act.
Recently, the ministry of health and family welfare asked all govt hospitals to file an institutional FIR within six hours after any instance of violence against on-duty healthcare workers.
