THANE: A fight took place between autorickshaw drivers and a traffic cop at Ulhasnagar on Friday, sparking violence between them.
The traffic constable has alleged that the rickshaw drivers were harassing a woman, and had parked their vehicles in the middle of the road. While the police were in the process of lodging a criminal offence against the two rickshaw drivers late evening, the drivers demanded a cross-complaint be filed against the cop.
A video of the altercation shows the traffic cop approaching one of the rickshaw drivers for allegedly violating traffic rules, leading to an argument between the driver and the cop.Sources said that the rickshaw driver “misbehaved” with the cop, by mouthing expletives.
The policeman allegedly slapped the rickshaw driver. After this, the rickshaw driver splashed water from a bottle on the constable’s face. Soon after, another rickshaw driver joined in and both drivers allegedly manhandled the constable. At this, the two rickshaw drivers started to beat up the cop. On seeing this, a traffic warden who was present at the spot rushed to the rescue of the constable being beaten up. The traffic warden was also roughed up. The video shows other rickshaw drivers come forward to stop their angry colleagues, but both of the drivers were in no mood to listen.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. A senior official from Central police station said that the process of registering an FIR was on.
