Bahraich violence: Crowd on streets with sticks & stones, police resort to lathicharge; top developments

NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh Police resorted to lathicharge and tear gas after the crowd on the streets of Bahraich turned violent, a day after a man was killed during Durga puja idol immersion.
Protests erupted in multiple locations, with demonstrators shouting slogans against police and administrative officials, while police conducted flag marches in the area.Thick black smoke rose from shops, houses, and vehicles that had been set ablaze.
“The situation is being brought under control and anti-social elements are being chased away,” Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bahraich Vrinda Shukla told PTI.

Man booked, 30 detained, internet shutdown

The police booked a man and detained over 30 people in connection with the violence in the village of Bahraich that escalated on Monday. Further, the internet services were also shut down.
Meanwhile, the main suspect, Salman, in the murder of the 22-year old on Sunday, along with 25 others, was detained following an FIR.
Reports indicate that 20-25 individuals have been apprehended. Meanwhile, the Durga Puja committee is demanding the arrest of all those involved, with chants calling for the death penalty for the accused resonating through the streets late into the night.
‘Safety guaranteed to all but … ‘: UP CM Yogi says immersion of idols to continue
The UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath ordered for the immersion of Durga puja idols to continue across the state. He also assured safety for all except the instigators of violence.
“Safety is guaranteed to all, but instructions have been given to identify the rioters and those whose negligence led to the incident and take strict action against them. Immersion of idols will continue. Administration and police officials have been directed to be present on the spot and communicate with religious organizations to ensure that the immersion of idols is done on time,” he said.

Man shot dead altercation over DJ music; violence escalate during funeral procession

Gopal Mishra was shot dead on Sunday after an altercation over DJ music. The violence escalated on Monday during Gopal’s funeral procession.
The family of the deceased had initially refused to perform the last rites, insisting on strict action against the perpetrators. The police tried to negotiate with the grieving family but only found a resolution after local MLA Sureshwar Singh arrived and reassured them of firm action against the accused.
