DHAKA: The acting mission chief of Bangladesh’s deputy high commission in Kolkata and the assistant high commissioner in Tripura are set to return to their respective posts shortly after foreign secretary-level talks between New Delhi and Dhaka scheduled for December 9.
Both officials – Sikder Mohammad Ashrafur Rahman in Kolkata and Arifur Rahman in Tripura – were called to Dhaka after Monday’s attack on the diplomatic mission in Agartala. In response, Bangladesh suspended all visa and consular services at its Agartala office the following day.
Three outfits affiliated with former PM Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party announced a protest march Sunday to the Indian high commission in Dhaka. The groups plan to submit a memorandum condemning the attack, the alleged desecration of the Bangladeshi national flag in Kolkata.
India-Bangladesh relations plummeted following reports of widespread persecution of Hindu minorities since the July uprising unseated the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August.
