Bangladesh wants UN intervention to keep hosting rights for Women’s T20 World Cup

Bangladesh‘s interim government is seeking United Nations (UN) intervention to retain its hosting rights for the upcoming 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup amidst growing concerns over travel restrictions and security issues. Asif Mahmud, the youth and sports adviser to the interim government, recently confirmed that discussions are underway to address these challenges and ensure the tournament goes ahead as planned.

The governments of Australia, the United Kingdom (including England and Scotland), India, and New Zealand have all issued advisories, either discouraging or outright restricting travel to Bangladesh due to ongoing security concerns. These advisories have cast a shadow over Bangladesh’s ability to successfully host the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh to appeal to the United Nations for T20 World Cup hosting rights

“There are travel restrictions for some countries, and so we will speak with the United Nations. There are some issues regarding security and infrastructure, and we will talk in this regard with Professor Yunus. He is a sports lover, and we hope that he can resolve the matter,” Mahmud said, adding that he plans to engage with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh‘s interim government, in an effort to find a resolution.

The travel advisories have created a significant roadblock for Bangladesh, threatening its ability to deliver a safe and secure environment for participating teams and fans. The interim government’s move to seek UN intervention underscores their determination to keep the hosting rights for the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday said that it is still monitoring the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and will soon take a decision with all options open including moving the tournament elsewhere.

Bangladesh is currently in a state of chaos with the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ousted following violent protests. Sheikh Hasina fled the country after protesters attacked her official residence last week. The protesters were demanding the abrogation of a quota system that provided 30 percent reservation to family members of freedom fighters.

The quota system was originally introduced in 1972 after the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan. However, the reservation was briefly removed in 2018 before being reinstated by the country’s High Court, resulting in massive protests by student groups. The Bangladesh Army took over after Sheikh Hasina‘s exit and installed an interim government.
