BENGALURU: In just a decade, Bengaluru has transformed from a promising tech hub to a metropolitan marvel that’s challenging the traditional dominance of Delhi and Mumbai, analysis of multiple data sources by Unboxing BLR Foundation, released Tuesday, has revealed.
As per the report ‘Bengaluru Rising’ released at Bengaluru Tech Summit, the city has rapidly closed the gap across multiple economic and lifestyle parameters, emerging as a standout performer in India’s urban landscape.
Its economic prowess is particularly striking. Bengaluru leads in job creation and salary growth, boasting the highest average monthly salaries among major Indian metros. The city has also been a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity, forming 27,137 new companies between 2012-2023, behind only Mumbai and Delhi.
Beyond economic metrics, Bengaluru offers an enviable quality of life. It enjoys the most pleasant weather among Indian cities, recording 181 days with temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. The city ranks high in air quality, with the most days of ‘satisfactory’ air quality compared to other major metros.
Notably, Bengaluru is becoming increasingly global. It leads in the percentage of population holding passports, reflecting its cosmopolitan character. The city has also maintained affordability, with housing prices remaining relatively stable compared to expensive markets like Gurugram and Navi Mumbai.
Bengaluru’s connectivity is impressive too: The city ranks second in domestic flight destinations and has the second-highest number of electric car registrations. It’s also a leader in formal employment growth, adding the most EPF-registered employees since the Covid-19 pandemic.
While challenges like traffic congestion persist, Bengaluru’s trajectory is undeniably upward. With its blend of innovation, opportunity, and livability, the city is not just competing with Delhi and Mumbai, it’s carving its own unique metropolitan identity.
Bengaluru tops salary charts for white- and blue-collar workers
Bengaluru not only offers more job opportunities but also pays better for most white- and blue-collar roles. The base salary for software engineers in Bengaluru is 13% to 33% higher than in other cities. Ranked second in 2018, Bengaluru surpassed Delhi-NCR within just five years to become the top-paying city for blue-collar workers, both male and female. Similarly, Pune has overtaken Mumbai in this category.
