Manchester United’s legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, is set to leave his post as the club’s global ambassador. Former Ferguson player Eric Cantona has criticised this action, saying the new owners show a “lack of respect” for the illustrious Scotsman.
Having guided Manchester United for 26 years and accumulated an outstanding 38 trophies, including two Champions League crowns and a record 13 Premier League titles, Ferguson is generally agreed as the most successful manager of the team. He has been worldwide ambassador and club director since 2013, retiring.
Ferguson, 82, apparently makes £2.16 million a year in his ambassadorial capacity. But in line with a cost-cutting effort meant to reallocate funds for team development, the new ownership headed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group has decided to terminate this role.
Having a great five-year career under Ferguson, Cantona, who four times won the Premier League, voiced his dismay at the choice. Given the great legacy Ferguson has left at Manchester United, he thinks he should be free to select any post inside the team. Eric Cantona wrote on Instagram:
According to reports, last week’s conversations between Ferguson and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe led to his decision to remove his ambassador post. The renowned manager is expected to retain his role as “non-executive director” even if his membership in the club has been revoked; he will still be welcomed at the club.
