NEW DELHI: Mangal Munda, the great-grandson of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda, passed away at the age of 45, on Friday due to cardiovascular failure at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, officials said.
“Birsa Munda’s kin Mangal Munda died of cardiovascular failure around 12.30 am. He was on a ventilator after being critically injured. We tried our best to save him but failed,” RIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Hiren Birua told news agency PTI.
Mangal Munda had been referred to RIMS on Tuesday after being initially treated at Khunti’s Sadar Hospital. He sustained head injuries in an accident on Monday evening near Pidihatu More, within the jurisdiction of Saiko police station in Jharkhand’s Khunti district.
The accident occurred when he fell from the top of a passenger vehicle.
Khunti SP Aman Kumar said, “Two persons fell from the roof of a passenger vehicle when it was negotiating a sharp bend at Pidihatu More under the Saiko police station area. Munda sustained head injuries and was admitted to Khunti’s Sadar hospital, from where he was taken to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims).”
Dr Vikas Kumar, chief senior resident at RIMS had earlier told PTI that, “Mangal had a serious brain injury and there were blood clots on both sides of the brain. There was a lot of bleeding due to the accident and he needed an immediate operation. We performed a successful operation on Tuesday under the leadership of Dr Anand Prakash, HoD of Neurosurgery Department of RIMS.”
“The surgery was conducted on both sides of the brain and it lasted for about four hours. The clots were removed. He is under doctors’ observation,” he added.
