NEW DELHI: A unique wedding ceremony took place online between the son of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and a woman from Pakistan.
The groom, Mohammad Abbas Haider, and the bride, Andleep Zahra from Lahore, were unable to meet in person due to visa issues stemming from political tensions between India and Pakistan.
Tahseen Shahid, a BJP corporator and father of the groom, organized the online “nikah” after several challenges arose, including the bride’s mother falling ill and being admitted to the ICU in Pakistan.
The ceremony occurred with Shahid and the “baraati” gathering at an imambara, while the bride’s family participated from Lahore.
Shia religious leader Maulana Mahfoozul Hasan Khan explained, “In Islam, the woman’s consent is essential for ‘nikah’ and she communicates it to the maulana.”
He noted that such ceremonies are possible online when maulanas from both sides conduct it together.
Haider hopes his wife receives her Indian visa without complications.
The online wedding was attended by BJP MLC Brijesh Singh Prishu and other guests, who extended their congratulations to the groom’s family.
