BJP Leader Shot Dead in Patna: Targeted Murder Investigation Underway | Patna News – Times of India

PATNA: Former president of the BJP‘s Patna City Chowk block, Shyam Sundar alias Munna Sharma, 55, was gunned down by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants on Monday. Sharma, also an office-bearer in Patna Mahanagar BJP, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
The incident took place around 4.45am at Nayi Sadak near Mangal Talab in Patna City. Sharma had stepped out of his house to arrange an autorickshaw to drop off a relative when three armed criminals approached him on a bike.After a brief scuffle, one of them shot him in the neck before they fled. Locals and Sharma’s family members, who heard the gunshot, took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Patna rural SP Raushan Kumar said after examining the CCTV footage, it was evident that the incident was a targeted murder. “The criminals snatched the victim’s cellphone after shooting him and fled. They discarded the phone somewhere, which is still active, and we are trying to trace it. Our preliminary investigation indicates that the murder was not related to a robbery attempt. The victim was waiting for an auto at some distance from his house when three people arrived on a bike. After a brief scuffle, they shot him,” Kumar said.Shashi Kumar Rana, station house officer (SHO) of Chowk police station, said the police received the information about the murder around 6.15am. “CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed and a technical investigation has been launched. Raids are being conducted to arrest the criminals,” Rana said, adding the victim’s body was sent to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The SHO said the actual motive behind the murder remained unclear. “His wallet and other valuables were still with him,” he said.
Patna City DSP II Gaurav Kumar said a special police team was investigating the case with the support of the Dial 100 team. “We are trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident. The family of Sharma confirmed that the gold chain he was wearing was still around his neck. One suspect has been identified using technical evidence,” Kumar said.
Family members said Sharma had stepped out to get an autorickshaw to take his relatives to the railway station following the engagement ceremony of his son on Sunday when the crime occurred.
Locals, along with CPI(ML) and BJP workers, took to the streets to protest the murder of Munna. They blocked Patna City-Gandhi Maidan Road and burned tyres in protest. The protesters were demanding a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victim’s family and the immediate arrest of the assailants.
