Bombay HC disposes off petition on release of Kangana starer ‘Emergency’ after producers, CBFC work out issues | Mumbai News – Times of India

Relief for Kangana Ranaut as Bombay high court disposes of petition on 'Emergency' release
The film, starring Kangana Ranaut, requires 13 changes as suggested by CBFC before being issued a UA certificate. Both sides agreed on the modifications.

MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Friday disposed of by consent a petition filed by Zee Entertainment in the row over certification of Emergency after the film producers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) said the matter was worked out.
The film stars BJP MP Kangana Ranaut as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The CBFC had suggested 13 changes, including four excisions, three modifications, and six insertions in the Kangana Ranaut-starrer film “Emergency” before it could be released under a UA certificate.
Senior counsel Sharan Jagtian for Zee informed a division bench headed by Justice B P Colabawalla, “We have worked it out.” He produced documents showing arangement made between parties and requested that the HC may pass an order on basis of these consent terms
Jagtiani said the cuts were carried out based on an email of Manikarnika dated September 28 indicating manner of making these changes.
Once the changes made in 30 days and are verified, the HC gave the CBFC two weeks to effect the cuts and issue certificate and kept all contention open.
On Thursday, the Zee counsel had informed the HC that the issue of cuts for the film “Emergency” was being resolved between the co-producer, Manikarnika Films, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The high court division bench, comprising Justices B P Colabawalla and F P Pooniwalla, was hearing a petition by Zee seeking the issuance of the CBFC certificate so that the film can be released in theatres. The bench had then scheduled the matter for Friday after being informed that the issue was being worked out.
At the last hearing, the high court was informed that Kangana’s Manikarnika Films had agreed to most of the changes suggested by the CBFC and had proposed a few modifications. The high court had thus requested both parties to return with their decision.
The Hindi movie “Emergency” had attracted protests from Sikh groups concerning the portrayal of their community. The CBFC has said that its decision is “after considering the representations received by various Sikh groups and directives issued by Courts”.
So the timeline is Manikarnika has 30 days to submit film with changes made. After submission it is verified and confirmed by CBFC which has 14 days for issuance of certificate then.
