‘Brij Bhushan is not the country’: Vinesh Phogat’s strong rebuttal on ‘conspiracy’ charge | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Wrestler and Congress leader, Vinesh Phogat, expressed confidence in securing the Julana seat in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections during her campaign kickoff in the Jind region on Sunday.
Phogat stressed the importance of earning the people’s trust, which she believes she already holds.
Phogat said, “It feels good, people are very excited, the responsibility we have been given, the Congress party has sent us here as candidates, so people are giving us love and supporting us.Our people will make me win, and I am a winner in their eyes, so nothing can be bigger than this.”
Standing atop a car, Vinesh Phogat received blessings from a crowd eager to see her, as beats of a dhol filled the air and supporters chanted, “Vinesh Phogat zindabad.”
In response to former BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s allegations that Phogat and Bajrang Punia were used by Congress as “pawns” in a “conspiracy” against the BJP, Phogat said, “Brij Bhushan is not the country. My country and my loved ones stand by me, and their support matters most to me.”
During her public meeting in Jind, Phogat extended gratitude to the Congress party for supporting the wrestlers and recalled Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Jantar Mantar to support them.
“We will inaugurate our office the day after tomorrow…The country has given me a lot. Whatever I am today is because of wrestling. I want to thank the Congress party a lot. Not only because they gave me the ticket but when we were sitting on the road, Priyanka Gandhi came to us. At that time we felt that we should leave our country but she (Priyanka Gandhi) said that we should not lose courage and we should answer these people through wrestling,” she said.
One month ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, Vinesh Phogat and wrestler Bajrang Punia joined the Congress party on Friday.
Shortly after joining the grand old party, Phogat was announced as the party’s candidate for the Julana Assembly constituency, while Punia was named the working president of the All India Kisan Congress.
Punia, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and Phogat, who became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final in Paris last month, also resigned from their positions in Northern Railways earlier on the day of their Congress induction.
She also met with former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday and described her new journey in these terms.

The voting for the 90-member legislative assembly in Haryana is set for October 5, with September 12 as the last day for filing nominations. The votes will be counted on October 8.
In the 2019 assembly polls, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 40 seats, while the Congress secured 30 seats.
