BSF officials said around 2am, the constable spotted the intruders, armed with knives and swords, crossing the border fence. “She charged at the intruders and gave a verbal warning, but they entered the Indian territory, surrounded the constable and attacked her.By then, a fellow jawan responded to her alarm and threw a stun grenade towards the intruders,” BSF South Bengal Frontier spokesperson DIG AK Arya said.
As the intruders continued their ascent, the constable fired at them, pushing them back into Bangladesh. Arya said BSF was not ruling out the possibility of an intruder getting injured.
“This is not an isolated incident. Such attacks have been made on jawans by cattle smugglers and intruders at the border outposts of Krishnanagar, sector headquarters in Nadia, Bamanabad, Rajanagar and Behrampore recently. Jawans had to fire in self-defence and have foiled incidents of smuggling and illegal intrusion. They have seized illegal drugs, animals and other illegal items,” Arya said.
The Ranaghat incident comes a day after a jawan was injured while successfully foiling a smuggling attempt on the India-Bangladesh border near Madhubana outpost in Behrampore. Officials said 8-10 smugglers were spotted by the jawan and as he challenged them, they attacked him. He fired at the smugglers, pushing them back.
On July 27, another jawan at Kalyani border outpost had to fire at intruders.
BSF has held meetings with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF has lodged strong protest against these unprovoked attacks.
