Businessman Scammed Out of 21 Lakh in NEET Admission Fraud | Delhi News – Times of India

Delhi businessman eyeing medical seat for daughter loses Rs 21 lakh

NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old businessman from Rohini became the latest victim of a scam in which NEET aspirants and their parents are targeted. He got messages offering an assured MBBS seat and fell prey to the nefarious intention of the scammers. He lost Rs 21 lakh.
His daughter always wanted to be a doctor and she even appeared for NEET this year. It was her fourth attempt.
A police officer said the businessman was actively searching for a medical college for his daughter’s admission. On May 6, he received a text message, which offered confirmed MBBS seats in various medical colleges. The next day, he received another message in which a seat in a good medical college was on offer. As the fee in this college was almost the same, the businessman got tempted into contacting the individuals posing as college representatives.
After the businessman selected the college, they told him that the total fee would be Rs 32 lakh and he would have to pay Rs 17 lakh upfront as the admission fee. He was told that since the aspirant belonged to the general category, the fee was higher. Later, the businessman received another call and the caller told him that further discussions would take place via WhatsApp and that he should arrange the necessary funds for his daughter’s admission.
On June 10, he transferred Rs 8.5 lakh to a bank account, followed by another payment of Rs 8.5 lakh on June 13. An additional Rs 4 lakh was paid later. In total, he transferred Rs 21 lakh. However, after he made these payments, communication from the scammers abruptly ceased, leaving him devastated and without a college seat. Realising he had been defrauded, he filed a complaint with the cyber police station in Rohini on Oct 1.
The complainant had sold his father’s property to secure sufficient funds for his daughter’s admission.
Police have registered a case for cheating and are investigating the matter.
Recently, New Delhi police dismantled a racket that duped NEET aspirants with promises of admission to top medical colleges for large sums of money. The gang is believed to have defrauded about a dozen students of several crores. Members of the gang targeted NEET aspirants who secured low ranks or failed the entrance exam. They used to promise them admissions to top-ranked govt medical colleges for a hefty sum of Rs 30-40 lakh.
