As just a couple of overs were left to close out the day, Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir decided to send in a nightwatchman and entrusted Mohammed Siraj with the onus. The gamble fell flat as Siraj was trapped in front on the first ball he faced after coming into the middle. With no bat involved, it looked dead in front from the naked eye, but the Indian pacer wasn’t convinced and thus signaled it to be sent upstairs for a re-look. The replays showcased three reds and the on-field umpire’s decision stood. Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary when the episode transpired on Day 1 of the 3rd India vs New Zealand Test in Mumbai, went hard on Siraj for taking the review.

Ravi Shastri Goes Hard On Siraj
Ravi Shastri could not wrap his head around with the decision to send Mohammed Siraj as the nightwatchman. According to the former India head coach, Ravichandran Ashwin was better suited to handle the situation.
“If they had to send someone, then someone like Ashwin should have been out there. Not only Ashwin is totally capable, can’t call him a nightwatchman,” said Shastri on air.
Shastri did not hold back from speaking his mind out loud and when Siraj took the dreadful review after being trapped plumb in front, he could not keep his quick-witted self on hibernation.
“That was reviewed and that was the result. How did I get that wrong, is what Mohammed Siraj is thinking. It can be a lonely place, the dressing room,” he added when the cameras panned to Siraj in the dressing room.
Siraj’s wicket brought Virat Kohli to the crease, who also fell in the quest of taking a quick single. Kohli’s wicket has left India in dire straits at 86/4. The hopes of salvaging pride with a consolation win now rest with Shubman Gill, who went unbeaten at 30* at Stumps on Day 1. A huge Day 2 is in awaits, which would probably decide in whose favour the match will gravitate towards.
