'Canadians desperate to turn the page': Pierre Poilievre reacts to Justin Trudeau's resignation

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has sharply criticised the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, framing it as a political ploy by the Liberal Party to salvage its chances in the upcoming election. In a video statement posted online, Poilievre dismissed the resignation as superficial, asserting that it does little to address the systemic issues he attributes to Trudeau’s leadership.
“ Canadians desperate to turn the page on this dark chapter in our history might be relieved today that Justin Trudeau is finally leaving,” Poilievre began. “But what has really changed? Every Liberal MP in power today and every potential Liberal leadership contender fighting for the top job helped Justin Trudeau break the country over the last nine years.” He accused Liberal MPs of uniformly supporting policies that, in his words, have led to economic and social turmoil.

The Conservative leader cited several grievances, including the inflationary carbon tax, which he claimed has quadrupled under Liberal policies, as well as housing policies that have doubled home prices. Poilievre also pointed to rising crime rates, immigration challenges, and escalating national debt as key failures of Trudeau’s tenure. “ They continued supporting Trudeau when he did all of those things. No. Their only objection is that he is no longer popular enough to win an election and keep them in power,” he argued.
Trudeau’s announcement on Monday, in which he attributed his decision to “internal battles” within the party, marked a significant shift in Canadian politics. Having led the country since 2015, Trudeau’s tenure saw both praise for his progressive policies and criticism over soaring costs of living and housing, as well as increasing political dissatisfaction. His resignation comes after a turbulent year, with the departure of key cabinet members and growing unrest within his party.
Poilievre’s critique extended beyond Trudeau to the broader Liberal Party, asserting that the resignation is a tactic to reset ahead of the election. “While, leaderless Liberals focus on saving their jobs and fighting each other for power, the country spirals out of control,” he said.
Trudeau, in his resignation speech, defended his legacy and criticised Poilievre for having what he described as a “very small vision” for Canada. He accused the Conservative leader of undermining climate initiatives and disregarding diversity. However, Poilievre has positioned himself as an advocate for what he calls “common-sense policies,” pledging to “axe the tax,” reduce crime, and restore affordability in Canada.
The political landscape remains uncertain as the Liberal Party begins its search for a new leader. Among the names floated is Mark Carney, former head of the Bank of Canada, who thanked Trudeau for his service but has yet to formally declare his candidacy. Parliament has been suspended until March 24 to facilitate the leadership race.
“Canadians can take back control of their lives and their country,” the opposition leader said. “We’ll cap spending, axe taxes, reward work, build homes, and secure borders—all to bring home Canada’s promise.”
