CBSE Releases SOPs for 2024–25 Practical Exams: Key Details for Schools

CBSE SOPs for Practical Exams 2024–25: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released comprehensive guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for conducting practical examinations, projects, and internal assessments for Classes X and XII. The updated instructions aim to ensure uniformity and error-free processes across all affiliated schools. Schools are advised to strictly adhere to the provided timelines and procedures to avoid disruptions in result declarations.
Exam Dates and Uploading Schedules
The practical examinations for the academic year 2024–25 will be conducted in two phases based on school categories:

School Type Practical Examination Dates
Winter-Bound Schools November 5, 2024, to December 5, 2024
Regular Session Schools January 1, 2025, to February 14, 2025

Simultaneously, schools must upload marks for practicals and projects during the exam period. It is mandatory to complete mark uploads by the last examination date of each respective category, as no extensions will be granted.
Guidelines for Conducting Examinations
The SOPs specify detailed steps to be followed during the practical examination process to maintain fairness and uniformity:
Preparation by Schools: Schools must ensure that laboratories are fully equipped with the required apparatus, chemicals, and materials. An external examiner will inspect these facilities at least one day before the examination.
Batch Size Management
• Students will be grouped into batches of 30 for better management.
• Each batch may be further split into sub-groups of 15 to optimise laboratory work and pen-and-paper tasks.
• The practical examination for the entire batch must be completed on the same day, and their marks uploaded collectively.
External and Internal Examiners
• For Class XII, CBSE will appoint external examiners who, alongside internal examiners, will conduct the assessments.
• Schools are required to provide accurate details of examiners, including their teacher ID and bank account details, for smooth payments.
Photographic Evidence
• A geotagged and time-stamped group photograph of each batch, including all students, internal and external examiners, and any observers, must be uploaded through the CBSE app-link.
Marking and Error Prevention
To avoid discrepancies, schools and examiners must carefully follow these protocols during mark submissions:
• Marks should reflect individual components such as laboratory records, viva voce, projects, and practical work.
• Only integer values are accepted; fractional marks must be rounded up.
• Examiners must preview and finalise marks on the same day as the examination, as corrections cannot be made once marks are uploaded.
Schools are advised to scan and save signed award lists digitally before uploading. These records must be securely stored in the school for one year after result declaration.
Special Instructions for Classes X and XII
Class X: Practical examinations and projects for Class X will be conducted internally by schools without the appointment of external examiners. Schools must arrange practical answer books locally, as CBSE will not supply them.
Class XII: External examiners will conduct assessments for specific subjects, with support from internal examiners.
Observers may be appointed by CBSE to oversee the examination process.
Strict Action Against Violations
CBSE has issued a stern warning against unfair practices during practical examinations. Any attempt to manipulate the examination process, such as influencing examiners or altering marks after uploading, will be treated as an unfair means (UFM) case. Such activities will result in strict action against the erring institutions or individuals.
Additionally, non-compliance with CBSE’s guidelines could lead to the cancellation of examinations, and the Board reserves the right to reschedule them under its supervision.
Support and Payments
CBSE has introduced an Integrated Payment System (IPS) for remunerating examiners and support staff. Schools must collect bank details of all involved personnel well in advance to ensure timely processing of payments.
Ensuring Fairness and Accuracy in Practical Assessments
The newly issued SOPs for practical examinations, projects, and internal assessments are a significant step towards streamlining the examination process. By enforcing stringent rules and incorporating technology, CBSE aims to eliminate errors and uphold the integrity of assessments. Schools are urged to meticulously follow these guidelines to ensure a seamless experience for students and examiners alike.
