AMBALA: Former Haryana home minister and senior BJP neta Anil Vij publicly declared on Sunday his desire to become the state’s next CM, citing overwhelming public support and his seniority in the party. His remarks added an element of intrigue to BJP’s internal dynamics in Haryana before the elections, following the party’s decision to appoint Nayab Singh Saini as CM in March, bypassing Vij for the position.
“People from all over Haryana are coming to me …they tell me I am the most senior, so why shouldn’t I become CM?” Vij said. The six-time MLA is seeking his seventh term from the Ambala Cantonment seat. “I will present my claim to become the CM. Whether the party makes me CM or not is up to it, but if I am made CM, I will change the destiny and face of Haryana,” he added. Vij reprised his election slogan – “We have worked, and we will continue to work” – and positioned himself as a neta with a proven track record. He highlighted his efforts to protect public land which had been encroached upon, the construction of Asia’s largest monument for unsung heroes, and his semi-nude protests staged for Ambala city’s development.
