NEW DELHI: Ram Chander, councillor from Shahbad Dairy, returned to AAP on Thursday, four days after switching to BJP. His decision to rejoin AAP comes in the lead-up to MCD‘s ward committee elections.
The announcement of the elections for the 12 ward committees was made by municipal secretary Shiva Prasad. They will take place on Sept 4. Chander had joined the BJP on Aug 25, along with four AAP councillors.
In a statement released by AAP, Chander expressed his regret, saying: “Joining BJP was my biggest mistake…I will remain with Aam Aadmi Party throughout my life.”
The party claimed that BJP had deceived Chander into joining just days ago but suffered a significant setback with his return to AAP on Thursday.
Chander said he wants to correct this mistake. Welcoming the councillor back into the party fold, Manish Sisodia posted on ‘X’: “I met an old AAP colleague and former Bawana Vidhan Sabha MLA Ramchandra. Today he has returned to his Aam Aadmi family.”
“I am a small soldier of Aam Aadmi Party. I had taken a wrong decision, but I have returned to my family again. Last night, our chief minister (Arvind Kejriwal) came in my dream and reprimanded me, saying Ramchandra get up and go and meet Manish (Sisodia), Gopal Rai, Sandeep (Pathak), and all the leaders. Go and meet your workers in the area and work,” he said.
BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said: “He came on his own and went on his own. But AAP inducting him shows their desperation.”
In the elections in Dec 2022, AAP had won 134 out of 250 wards in the MCD polls. Sources in BJP as well as AAP said that the leadership of both the parties are in touch with each other’s councillors and would try to poach them ahead of the standing committee elections.
