Commitment to democracy reinforces our Poland ties: PM Modi – Times of India

PM Modi arrived in Warsaw Wednesday, on his three-day tour to Poland and Ukraine, hoping as a “friend and partner” for early return of peace in the region. He will also share his views on ending the Ukraine war.
Modi said he was travelling to Ukraine at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky for what will be the first-ever visit to the country by an Indian PM.Modi’s visit to Warsaw is the first by an Indian PM in 45 years.
“I look forward to the opportunity to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelensky on strengthening bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict,” he said.
I am confident that the visit will serve as a natural continuation of extensive contacts with the two countries and help create the foundation for stronger and more vibrant relations in the years ahead.”
After his official engagements in Warsaw, like other leaders who have visited Ukraine, Modi will undertake a 10-hour overnight train journey from Przemysl on the Polish-Ukrainian border to Kyiv. He will have a bilateral meeting with Zelensky during his eight-hour stay in Kyiv.He will also interact with the Indian community there before returning to Poland in the same train.
Soon after landing in Poland, Modi posted on X: “This visit will add momentum to the India-Poland friendship and benefit the people of our nations.”
PM Modi started his visit to Poland, the first by an Indian PM in 45 years, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Memorial. Known affectionately as ‘Good Maharaja’ in Poland, the Jam Saheb had provided refuge to more than 1,000 Polish children who escaped the Soviet Union. PM Modi also paid tribute at the memorial plaque for the Valivade-Kolhapur camp near the Monte Casino War Memorial.
At Valivade village near Kolhapur town in Maharashtra, more than 5,000 Poles lived, integrated, and worked for several years before returning to their motherland. The majority of them had arrived either by land or sea route after evacuations from Polish camps at the height of the Second World War. “This memorial is a tribute to the great Royal Family of Kolhapur…(which) was at the forefront of giving shelter to Polish women and children displaced due to the horrors of World War II,” Modi said in a post on X.
“My visit to Poland comes as we mark 70 years of our diplomatic relations. Poland is a key economic partner in Central Europe. Our mutual commitment to democracy and pluralism further reinforces our relationship. I look forward to meeting my friend Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to further advance our partnership,” said Modi, adding he will also engage with the members of the vibrant Indian community in Poland.
“The discussions that the Prime Minister will hold with the Polish leadership will allow the two sides to exchange views at the top level on a variety of subjects, and that kind of detailed discussion we have not had in a certain period now. So, it will be a…real useful exchange of views,” Indian ambassador to Poland Nagma Mohamed Mallick told a news agency.
She said that a social security agreement was ready for signing, with just a few small details to be worked out. “And they can be done, very, very quickly. And so that is the other thing that will be an important outcome,” she said.
