Communal violence erupts in Karnataka, miscreants pelt stones at mosque
Hindu activists gather at BC Road, Bantwal

MANGALURU: The Mangaluru city police have launched an investigation after miscreants allegedly pelted stones at a mosque in Katipalla late night on Sunday. City police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed that a probe is underway.
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed near Bantwal on Monday following the circulation of a viral audio message the previous day.In response, Dakshina Kannada district police have ramped up security measures, with SP Yathish N stationed at the scene.
It may be recalled that BJP MLAs from the Dakshina Kannada assembly constituency urged the police to cancel the Eid Milad procession, expressing concerns about potential unrest allegedly orchestrated by fanatics. Mangaluru City North MLA Bharath Shetty claimed that leaders of a prominent Hindu organisation were provoked via social media, with a voice message challenging them to gather in Kaikamba.

While Shetty insisted that Hindus are not instigating violence, he warned that a failure by the police to take action against those inciting communal tensions could lead to further unrest in the district.
In a related development, Mangaluru City CEN police have registered cases against Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sharan Pumpwell and Bajrang Dal leader Puneeth Attavar for making provocative remarks. Commissioner Agrawal cautioned that anyone issuing provocative statements or posts would face strict action, as the police continue to monitor social media activity.
Additionally, Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik U called for the arrest of Mohammed Sharif, former president of the Bantwal Town Municipal Council, after a voice message allegedly capable of inciting communal discord surfaced on social media.
