NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has ordered investigations into Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit‘s allegations of surveillance and the large sums of cash transfers from Punjab ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. LG Saxena has requested a detailed report within three days.
In a letter dated December 25, Dikshit alleged the presence of intelligence personnel from the “Punjab Government” outside his Delhi residence. He further claimed that “official vehicles” linked to these personnel were frequently observed near his home, indicating possible monitoring and pressure tactics.
The Aam Aadmi Party, which administers both Delhi and Punjab, has not yet commented on this.
Earlier on Thursday, Sandeep Dikshit complained to LG VK Saxena accusing AAP of collecting sensitive details in the name of “non-existent” programmes like its Mahila Samman scheme. The scheme, promising to provide Rs 2,100 for women in Delhi, is AAP’s key plank for the upcoming assembly elections.
“Any party can promise anything. If they said they would give Rs 2,100 if they win the elections, there was no issue. But they said that a scheme of Rs 1,000 is going on, and they will increase it to Rs 2,100. They are making you (women) fill forms for the scheme,” the candidate pointed out.
Congress’ complaint came a day after a couple of departments under Delhi govt clarified there was no such scheme and distanced themselves from AAP’s promises.
According to news agency PTI, Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav criticised Kejriwal, stating it was reprehensible that he was using such lowly strategies “to curb the democratic process and free and fair elections” after recognising his impending defeat.
“The Lt. Governor has taken cognisance of Sandeep Dikshit’s complaint, as the charges levelled by Dikshit are grave and it is imperative that prospective candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections are not intimidated and discouraged from participating in the democratic process,” Yadav said.
The Delhi Congress leader further stated that Kejriwal was resorting to questionable tactics for survival after his departments exposed the hollow promises of Rs 2,100 to women and free treatment for elderly citizens.
Additionally, Dikshit alleged that the Punjab government was transferring “large sums of cash” (in crores) to influence Delhi voters. He stated that “private vehicles,” often with Punjab Police escorts, were travelling through Haryana and Rajasthan to reach Delhi.
The Lieutenant Governor’s office has instructed the Delhi police commissioner to implement “immediate steps” for vehicle inspection at city borders, particularly those arriving from Punjab.
Instructions have been issued to the DGPs of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan to maintain vigilance and track suspicious movements that might suggest unlawful cash transfers or electoral misconduct.
Delhi’s chief secretary has been tasked with alerting the chief electoral officer to enhance surveillance as the election approaches.
Despite being allies in the INDIA bloc, formed to challenge the BJP earlier this year before the general election, AAP and Congress are competing against each other in the upcoming Delhi election.
