UP cop suspended for demanding potatoes as bribe in Kannauj

LUCKNOW: In a district known as the potato belt, a request for the kitchen staple is hardly unusual — unless, of course, it’s a cop demanding five kilograms of the tuber as a bribe, reports Pathikrit Chakraborty. A sub-inspector in UP’s Kannauj was suspended after an audio clip of his conversation with a farmer, in which he demanded 5 kg potatoes to settle a police case, went viral on social media.
In the two-minute audio, SI Ram Kripal, in-charge of a police outpost, was heard negotiating with the farmer for 5 kg potatoes. The farmer expressed his inability, citing financial crunch, and instead offered 2 kgs. The SI initially refused to budge, but finally settled for 3 kg potatoes.
After the audio went viral, Kannauj SP Amit Anand suspended the SI and ordered an inquiry by circle officer Kamlesh Kumar. “Cops are probing whether ‘potato’ was code for a certain amount of money,” the officer added.
