KOLHAPUR: Police have arrested a couple on the charge of strangulating their son-in-law on a near-empty state transport bus, plying from Gadhinglaj village to this western Maharashtra city, for allegedly harassing his wife.
A police officer on Friday said during interrogation, Hanmantappa Kale (48) and Gourava Kale (45) admitted to the crime and said their daughter had threatened to commit suicide if her husband, Sandip Shirgave (35), was “not stopped from harassing her”.The officer said the Kales were residents of Gadhinglaj, nearly 80km from Kolhapur city, and Shirgave was from Shirol.
ST staffers find man’s body at Kolhapur CBS
The crime came to light early Thursday morning when some ST cleaning staff found Shirgave lying motionless near a food kiosk on the Central Bus Stand (CBS) premises and alerted police. The police took Shirgave to CPR hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The autopsy report stated that he died of asphyxiation caused by strangulation.
The police found a bag near Sandip’s body on the CBS premises and recovered some documents and his wife’s phone number. “His wife told us that her parents had left Gadhinglaj with Shirgave on a bus. We found CCTV footage from the CBS premises and shared the clips, showing a couple dumping a body, with Gadhinglaj police,” the officer said.
The Gadhinglaj police confirmed that the couple seen in the CCTV footage were Hanmantappa and Gourava.
Investigation revealed that Shirgave had gone to Gadhinglaj to meet his wife and son. “As their daughter was upset with Shirgave, Hanmantappa and Gourava dropped him at the Gadhinglaj bus stop on Wednesday. However, he returned to their home,” the officer said.
“On finding Shirgave drunk in the evening, the couple again took him to the bus stand. They bought tickets in advance and boarded a no-conductor bus. Two more passengers were on board the bus,” the officer said.
“When Shirgave was asleep around midnight, the couple strangled him with the lace of a track pant. The other two co-passengers were seated far from the Kales and had no inkling what was happening on the bus. As the bus reached the Kolhapur CBS around dawn, they brought Shirgave out of the vehicle, dumped him near the food kiosk and fled,” an officer from the local crime branch said.
“The CCTV footage clearly showed that the couple were dragging Shirgave’s body from the bus to the food kiosk on the CBS premises. A police team went to Gadhinglaj and arrested his father- and mother-in-law,” the officer said.
