Cyclone Fengal: Puducherry government warns residents of heavy rains via SMS alert
Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall near Puducherry later today, prompting officials to issue warnings and prepare for potential impact. Around 12 lakh residents received SMS alerts urging vigilance as heavy rains lashed the region on Saturday.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy visited affected areas and reviewed preparations made by the Disaster Management department. He inspected relief centers housing evacuees from low-lying areas and directed officials to prioritize resident safety.
District Collector A Kulothungan confirmed the distribution of food to those in shelters and outlined the steps taken to protect residents. “We have evacuated people from low lying areas and shelter homes are ready to accommodate them. Arrangements were also made to supply food packets,” he stated, adding that the National Disaster Relief Force from Arakonam has arrived to assist.
Control rooms are operating in the collectorate and relevant departments. Emergency contact numbers, including a WhatsApp number (94889 81070) and toll-free numbers 1077 and 112, have been activated. The cyclone is anticipated to cross between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry.
The public has been advised to remain indoors. The beach road and tourist spots are closed. Schools and colleges are shut. Theaters have cancelled evening and night shows under the Disaster Management Act 2005. Many shops closed early due to the heavy rain. Daily wage earners, vendors, and laborers are among those significantly affected by the downpour.
