David Coulthard Advises McLaren To Think Like World Champions

Formula One commentator and ex-driver David Coulthard recently advised McLaren that they need to think as World Champions if they want to get their hands on the Constructors and Drivers Championship. McLaren has emerged as the fastest car on the F1 grid for a while now and it is a cause of concern for Red Bull who are in fear of losing both of their championships. Red Bull have been facing issues of their own as they have seen a considerable drop in performance and are struggling to get on the F1 podium.

David Coulthard had some words of wisdom for the McLaren team.

You’re Not Thinking Like The Champion Teams- Coulthard

David Coulthard while speaking on the Formula For Success podcast had a lot of words for the McLaren team. Coulthard believes that McLaren is currently not thinking like a championship team and needs to step up in their decisions.

“We’re in this situation where there’s only 44 points between Oscar and Lando, where Lando is 62 points behind Max. So arguably, it’s actually too close to call in terms of doing a team order.

“There were many people, many of the channels, many of the journalists after Monza saying, ‘McLaren need to get behind one driver’. Quite clearly, if they are, it has to be the guy with more points. That isn’t going to sit comfortably with Oscar.

“But I think that McLaren now absolutely need to think they’re World Champions. Because if you think you’re lucky to be in a position to win the Constructors’, and you think you’re lucky to win races, you’re not thinking like the champion teams.

“The champion teams are pissed off when they don’t win races. They’re not going, ‘Well, you know, second and third is a good result’, they’re going, ‘What a disaster! We should have won this race!’

“So some big, big debates that will have to take place in the coming weeks,” said Coulthard on the podcast.

Essential Next Few Races For McLaren

The next few races are going to be essential for McLaren as they need to win a lot of points and hopefully the races in order to get ahead of Red Bull in the Constructors and World Drivers Championship. McLaren is currently within touching distance of the Constructors Championship and could overtake Red Bull at the next race weekend at Baku.
