KOLKATA: The death of a 28-year-old youth from Konnagar, Bikram Bhattachajee, who succumbed to his injuries at R G Kar Medical College on Friday afternoon after being run over by a truck – has sparked a row.
Ex-TMC MP Kunal Ghosh took to social media to claim that the patient did not get treatment, quoting media reports. The hospital denied the allegations.
The deceased’s family has not lodged any written complaint either with the hospital or police. But sources in Lalbazar said a general diary was registered.
“The patient was attended by emergency medical officers and senior faculty members, including those from surgery and orthopaedic departments, without any delay. Due to the injury, he was hemodynamically unstable. All required treatment was initiated. But his injuries were so severe that doctors could not save him,” said a hospital official. The deceased was referred from a Serampore hospital and had multiple fractures.
Bhattacharjee’s treatment record said essential medications were given to stabilise his condition. He also underwent debridement of the wounds and necessary tests.
The patient was being taken for CT scan when his condition deteriorated again and he die.”We are open to probe,” said an official.
AITC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said the demands of junior doctors were fair and valid but he urged them to protest in a way that didn’t disrupt essential services.
