NEW DELHI: Following the tragic death of three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi minister Atishi and the Mayor are set to make a big announcement regarding coaching centres shortly.
Civil services aspirants have initiated an indefinite hunger strike, demanding action and compensation of Rs 5 crore for the victims’ families.
The protest, now in its third day has seen participation from over 400 students amidst significant police presence.
One protesting student mentioned that 10 aspirants have begun the hunger strike, vowing to continue until their primary demands, including a compensation of Rs 5 crore for the victims’ families, are met.
“We initially hoped the administration, the UPSC coaching lobby, and the authorities would listen to us. But after four days, we realize this protest is going nowhere,” said a female student participating in the hunger strike.
“We are not being taken seriously. They think we will break and return to our studies after some days, but we are here to ensure justice is served,” she added further.
The incident occurred when three UPSC aspirants died due to flooding at Rau’s IAS Study Circle basement in Old Rajendra Nagar following heavy rains on July 27. Water from a flooded drain rushed into the basement, where a library was located.
Delhi Police have been engaging with the protesting students daily to understand their concerns.
“We are interacting with them daily and understanding the problems they face. We are also writing to the authorities concerned regarding their issues,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan.
Additionally, a delegation of students met with Lt Governor VK Saxena to present their demands.
