NEW DELHI: A Delhi Patiala court dismissed a petition on Tuesday that sought a ruling on MP Rashid Engineer’s regular bail application in a terror funding case.
Additional sessions judge Chander Jit Singh rejected the accused’s application requesting a decision on the bail plea. The judge clarified that at this stage, he was only authorised to rule on the miscellaneous application and lacked jurisdiction to decide on the regular bail petition, PTI news agency reported.
The MP approached a Delhi court requesting interim bail in a terror-funding case to participate in the Parliamentary session
Speaking virtually from Tihar Jail, Rashid said, “I have been elected by my people. I was not allowed to attend the last session. With folded hands I request you that I may be granted interim bail.”
Why was Rashid arrested?
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended Rashid in 2019 over allegations of terror financing. He received temporary bail on September 10 to participate in electoral campaigning for his Awami Itehad Party candidates.
The investigation into Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali led to the discovery of Rashid’s involvement. The NIA had previously detained Watali for allegedly channelling funds to terror organisations and separatist groups in Kashmir.
The NIA subsequently filed charges against various individuals, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, as part of this investigation.
Following his admission of guilt, a trial court handed Malik a life sentence in 2022.
