Delhi drivers to get 50 percent discount on traffic fines: Here’s how it works – Times of India

The Delhi government is set to introduce a new measure aimed at reducing traffic fines for specific violations. Under the proposed plan, certain traffic violations will be eligible for a 50 percent reduction in the challan amount, as confirmed by Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot on his X (formerly known as Twitter) handle. The reduction aims to encourage offenders to pay their fines promptly, reducing the backlog of unpaid challans and easing the burden on the judiciary. The proposal has been forwarded to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena for his approval.

Delhi traffic fine reduction: What violations are covered

The reduction will apply to a variety of traffic violations, including driving without a valid license, allowing an unauthorised person to drive, dangerous driving, driving when physically or mentally unfit, and driving an uninsured vehicle. The measure also covers penalties for racing or conducting speed trials without permission in public areas.

Delhi traffic fine reduction: Timeframe for settlements

According to the government’s plan, once the notification is issued, offenders will have 90 days to settle any existing challans. For new violations occurring after the notification, the time frame for settling fines is set at 30 days.
This initiative focuses on compounding traffic violations under select sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, making it easier for drivers to settle their fines. The plan empowers officers of the Delhi Traffic Police, starting from the rank of head constable, and officials from the transport department to compound these offences. Additionally, Assistant Traffic Inspectors (ATIs) of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will be granted similar authority. (Inputs from PTI).
