'Didn't meet her family since 2008': Tortured by in-laws for 16-years, Madhya Pradesh woman rescued

BHOPAL: Mahila Thana police successfully rescued a woman on Saturday evening, who had been ‘confined’ to her in-laws’ house for the past 16 years.
The woman’s condition was reportedly critical and she has been admitted to a hospital for medical treatment.
According to the police, she had been prevented from meeting her maternal family since 2008. The exact reason behind this confinement will only be revealed after statements from her in-laws are recorded.
SHO Mahila Thana Shilpa Kaurav said that the complaint was lodged by Kishanlal Sahu, 75, a resident of Narsinghpur. He arrived at the police station with his two sons and a daughter.
Kishanlal stated that his daughter, Ranu Sahu, was married in 2006, but from 2008 onwards, her in-laws had not allowed her to meet her maternal family.
Although Kishanlal and his family were occasionally informed about Ranu and her two children’s well-being by neighbours, he recently learned that her health had deteriorated, and her children had been sent away. Concerned, Kishanlal sought help to rescue his daughter. Following the complaint, the Mahila Thana police informed senior officials and requested assistance from the Jehangirabad Police.
SHO Kaurav said that upon reaching the designated address with the police team, Ranu’s in-laws confirmed that she was on the second floor of the house. The police found her lying on a plastic-woven cot, with a plate containing a piece of chapati and a few pieces of potato next to her. She was in no condition to speak or communicate. The police immediately rescued her and admitted her to a hospital for urgent treatment. Her husband was also sent to the hospital to be with her.
SHO Kaurav stated that the complaint by the elderly father will be thoroughly investigated. Only after Ranu recovers will it be clear why her in-laws kept her confined for such a long period and why they prevented her from meeting her family.
