“This follows disgraceful attacks on the Indian cultural centre, temples and Hindu homes in several places, even as reports came in of Muslim civilians protecting other minority homes and places of worship,” Tharoor said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He affirmed India’s support for the people of Bangladesh during this challenging period but strongly condemned the anarchic excesses.
“It is essential that Muhammad Yunus and his interim government take urgent steps to restore law & order in the interests of all Bangladeshis, of every faith. India stands with the people of Bangladesh at this turbulent time, but such anarchic excess can never be condoned,” the Congress MP wrote.
In his post Tharoor reiterated his earlier claim that while there have been reports of vandalism against Hindu homes and temples in Bangladesh, there are also accounts of Bangladeshi Muslims stepping up to protect them.
After Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5, ending her 15-year autocratic rule, numerous reports surfaced about attacks on Hindu households, temples, and businesses.
In its first official statement since being appointed on Thursday, the interim cabinet expressed grave concern over the attacks on religious minorities in certain areas. The cabinet announced its intention to immediately engage with representative bodies and other relevant groups to address and resolve these heinous attacks.
Hindus, who constitute approximately 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million population, have historically supported Hasina’s Awami League party. The party has faced criticism in the wake of violent clashes between anti-quota protesters and security forces last month.
