Tourists fight with Maharashtra homestay owner, run over his sister; 3 held

NAVI MUMBAI: Eleven tourists from Pune, including college students, in an inebriated state assaulted the owner of a home stay facility when they were denied rooms on rent, as they were intoxicated. Following this the car driver, Akash Uparvat (26), mowed down a woman, Jyoti Dhamnaskar (34), the sister of the home stay owner, identified as Abhijit Dhamnaskar (30).The woman was killed on the spot after being crushed. Three of the accused have been arrested so far.
Inspector Uttam Rikame of Shrivardhan Police Station informed that on Sunday, the group visited Harihareshwar Beach in Raigad district for a weekend picnic. After getting drunk, the group went to the home stay facility of Abhijit Dhamnaskar and asked for rental rooms. As they were drunk, Dhamnaskar refused to accommodate them.
The group turned violent and assaulted Dhamnaskar with fist blows and kicks. Dhamnaskar raised an alarm, and the locals gathered at the spot. The tourist group, fearing being beaten up by the locals, sped away in their car, but one of them was left behind and was detained by the locals and thrashed. However, the tourist group returned to rescue their friend around 1.30am.
As the locals had gathered near the home stay and were waiting for the police to arrest the detained tourist, Uparvat, with his friends accompanying him, drove rashly while attempting to run over the crowd of locals, when the woman, Jyoti Dhamnaskar, was mowed down by the Scorpio car. Hence, the tourist group sped away.
Inspector Rikame said, “The accused who was nabbed at the location has been identified as Irappa Dhotre. The other wanted accused are Niraj Uparvat, Aashish Sonawane, Anil Mane, Amil Nagpur, Sachin Jamadar, Tullu (full name not known) and Adil Shaikh.”
