The proposal to introduce B2C e-invoicing, currently on a voluntary basis, will help in the process, revenue secretary Sanjay Malhotra told reporters. “Foreign tourists when they buy goods and take it back with them, it’s an export of those goods. With this, customs authorities at the airport will be able to verify that the goods were bought here and will be eligible for a refund. It will also help in reducing tax evasion.”
The main objective is, however, meant to help consumers verify the invoices, a move aimed at ushering in transparency and checking evasion.
GST authorities will set up a portal or e-invoice generation, which once verified will enable its entry into GST returns. “Other than empowering the customer, it will also help us in providing refunds,” Malhotra said. TNN
