NEW DELHI: Wife and son of late MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, Hena Sahab and Osama, on Sunday joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in the presence of RJD chief Lalu Yadav, alongside Bihar’s former deputy chief minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.
Hena Sahab had previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Siwan as an Independent candidate. This marked the first election since 2009 that the RJD did not grant her a ticket, following her late husband’s death.
In the election, she finished 92,000 votes behind the victorious Janata Dal (United) candidate Vijaylakshmi Devi, while the RJD candidate, former Bihar Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, came in a distant third.
Mohammad Shahabuddin, served as the Siwan MP from 1996 to 2004. Known for his dominance in Siwan, he died in 2021 from a Covid-19 infection while serving a life sentence in Delhi’s Tihar Jail for a double murder.
During his tenure, he was embroiled in numerous criminal cases, with over 36 charges against him, including high-profile murders, such as the killings of JNUSU president and journalist Rajdeo Ranjan.
Osama’s entry into politics and subsequent joining of the RJD have rekindled the longstanding ties between the families of Lalu Yadav and Shahabuddin.
