Ex-principal's Sandip Ghosh's polygraph test leaves more questions than answers

NEW DELHI: Former principal of R G Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, was found to be ‘deceptive’ during a polygraph test related to the rape and murder of a trainee woman postgraduate doctor.
The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi reported Ghosh’s responses as ‘deceptive on certain important issues’ related to the case.
While polygraph test results are not admissible in court, they can lead to corroborative evidence.
According to officials, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case, arrested Ghosh on September 2 for financial irregularities at the hospital and later charged him with evidence tampering.
The CBI claims that Ghosh was informed about the incident at 9:58 am on August 9 but delayed in filing a police complaint.
A complaint was lodged later by the medical superintendent-vice principal. Instead of filing an FIR, a suicide theory was suggested, which did not align with the visible injuries on the victim’s body, per the CBI.
Ghosh contacted Tala Police Station‘s Officer In Charge (OC) Abhijit Mondal at 10:03 am and later got in touch with an advocate at 1:40 pm.
The police registered a case of unnatural death at 11:30 pm. Mondal, who is also in CBI custody, allegedly delayed reaching the crime scene despite being informed at 10:03 am.
The official diary entry stated the victim was ‘found lying in an unconscious state’ which contradicted a doctor’s declaration that she was already dead.
The CBI alleges this was done “in conspiracy with hospital authorities and other unknown persons.”
Mondal’s delayed action and failure to secure the crime scene reportedly led to the tampering of evidence and protected suspects, namely Sanjay Roy and others. Ghosh allegedly instructed subordinates to move the body to the morgue quickly.
The incident occurred early on August 9 when the trainee doctor went to rest during her shift.
She was found with severe injuries in the seminar hall by a doctor on his rounds. Roy, a police volunteer, was arrested after CCTV footage placed him at the scene.
The Calcutta high court transferred the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13, with the CBI taking over on August 14.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
