Female Doctor Harassed by App-Based Biker After Cancelling Ride | Kolkata News – Times of India

'Sent obscene videos on WhatsApp': Kolkata doctor harassed by app biker for cancelling ride

KOLKATA: A female junior doctor accused an app-based biker of harassment and sending her sexually explicit content on her mobile after she cancelled a ride. The former CNMCH student, now a first-year postgraduate trainee at a private hospital along Bypass, lodged a police complaint, leading to cops arresting the accused biker. The incident was reported from Purba Jadavpur on Thursday.
“Based on her complaint, we began a probe and arrested the app biker on Friday morning. He was identified as Raju Das (41), a resident of Mukundapur,” said DC (East) Arish Bilal. According to the plaint, the woman booked a bike on Thursday but later cancelled it as an emergency arose.
The biker reportedly then called her 17 times and kept asking why she cancelled the ride when he had almost reached the destination, riding several kilometres. It didn’t stop there. The accused allegedly started sending obscene videos on WhatsApp. When the doctor objected, he turned abusive.
The doctor later filed a complaint with East Jadavpur PS and also reported the matter to the cyber cell. The police tracked the booking, took help from the ride-hailing company and summoned the accused. The cops then arrested him after questioning him and found prima facie evidence that corroborated the allegations.
“The rider said he would arrive late. I was in a hurry, so I cancelled it. When I got into a car to head to my destination, he started calling and harassing me,” the doctor alleged.
“We will move court to record the statement of the victim before a magistrate,” an officer said, adding that they would also look into why she had cancelled the ride. The app bike firm said it will cooperate with police. “We have a no-tolerance policy against passenger harassment,” said a spokesperson of one of the biggest app cab and bike aggregators in the city.
BNS sections slapped include 75 (sexual harassment), 79 (outraging woman’s modesty) and 351 (criminal intimidation).
