Argentina’s unprecedented economic reforms under President Javier Milei have become a focal point of global interest, with parallels drawn to efforts led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in the United States.
The duo is spearheading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President-elect Donald Trump, aiming to reduce government waste and streamline federal spending.
Argentina’s historic achievement
As per Fox Business, Argentina has achieved a fiscal surplus for the first time in over a century. President Milei credited this historic milestone to aggressive spending cuts and the elimination of monetary emission.
He stated, “The deficit was the root of all our evils—without it, there’s no debt, no emission, no inflation. Today, we have a sustained fiscal surplus, free of default.”
Musk also congratulated the Argentinian President on this achievement.

This transformation was made possible by drastic measures, including reducing monetary emission to zero, cutting subsidies, and downsizing the government workforce. Previously, inflation had soared above 60% in 2022, driven in part by excessive spending on social programs. The reforms, while controversial, have restored stability to Argentina’s economy.
Musk and Ramaswamy’s mission with DOGE
Inspired by Argentina’s fiscal turnaround, Musk and Ramaswamy are tasked with auditing the US executive branch and providing recommendations to eliminate inefficiencies. The DOGE initiative has already garnered support from prominent Republicans. Senator Marsha Blackburn is leading legislative efforts with the “DOGE Acts,” which include freezing federal hiring and salaries for a year and relocating federal agencies out of Washington, D.C.
As per Fox Business, DOGE’s approach echoes Musk’s reputation for crowdsourcing solutions.
Subsequently, Musk has invited public feedback via social media, urging Americans to identify wasteful regulations that hinder economic growth.

The United States faces its own fiscal struggles, with a record $1.8 trillion deficit in 2023. Both parties attribute the issue to different causes, with Republicans blaming excessive spending and Democrats citing tax cuts under Presidents Trump and Bush. Federal spending on politically sensitive programs such as Social Security and Medicare has also surged, further straining the budget.
Will the “Argentine formula” work for the US?
Milei’s reforms, described by him as a rejection of “collectivist experiments,” may serve as a model for DOGE.
However, replicating such measures in the US comes with challenges. Political sensitivities and deeply entrenched programs will likely complicate the adoption of similar strategies.
The success of DOGE’s vision under Musk and Ramaswamy remains to be seen, but Argentina’s economic turnaround highlights the transformative potential of decisive fiscal reforms.
