NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday will deliver his 11th consecutive speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day.
PM Modi’s Thursday speech will make him the third Prime Minister after Jahawar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi to address the nation for the 11th time from the Red Fort on Independence Day.
Since his first Independence Day speech as PM in 2014, Narendra Modi has spoken on a range of issues concerning topics of national and international relevance.
Covering stakeholders from every strata of the country, PM Modi’s last ten speeches have highlighted the foundation of his governance and the contours of the Centre’s policies.
Here are top quotes from PM Modi’s last 10 Independence Day speeches:
2014: PM calls himself ‘pradhan sevak’

  • In his first-ever Independence Day address weeks after he was sworn in as the Prime Minister, PM Modi described himself as the “pradhan sevak” of the country.
  • Stressing collective efforts, he urged people to move one step forward which will mean the country collectively moving many steps forward.
  • “We have to proceed along with the participation of the people,” he had said.
  • Among the key announcements in his maiden Red Fort address was the “Pradhanmantri Jan-Dhan Yojana”, which was aimed at the financial inclusion of citizens and banking the unbanked.
  • He also announced that a ‘clean India’ campaign would be launched on Gandhi Jayanti later that year. The Prime Minister laid thrust on all schools in the country to have toilets with separate toilets for girls so that they are not compelled to leave schools midway.

2015: Speaks on success of Jan Dhan Yojna & Swach Bharat mission

  • PM Modi spoke about the non-availability of electricity in some areas and said it will be made available to the remaining 18,500 villages in the next 1000 days. “I took the meeting of government officials and enquired from them about the timeline. Someone promised to complete the task by 2019, and someone assured to complete it by 2022,” he said.
  • Almost 4.25 lakh toilets were built in 2.62 lakh schools nationwide in one year; this gives self-confidence that we can do what we want, said the PM.
  • The PM made a disclosure that Rs 6500 crores were disclosed under the compliance window of black money and foreign assets law.
  • Questioning the practice of “interviews” for recruitment even at relatively junior levels, the Prime Minister called upon concerned departments to end this practice at the earliest, and to promote merit by recruiting only through transparent, online processes.
  • Bank accounts are essential for integrating the poor into the financial system, 1the 7 crore people opened accounts under Jan Dhan Yojna, said the PM.

2016: PM thanks people of Gilgit & PoK

  • PM Modi announced the government had decided to raise pensions for freedom fighters by 20 per cent.
  • For Below Poverty Line families, PM Modi announced the government will bear expenditures up to Rs 1 lakh per year so that their healthcare needs can be taken care of.
  • PM Modi had also taken a veiled dig at Pakistan over its support of cross-border terrorism. “I say to our neighbours, Let’s fight poverty, by fighting our own people we will destroy ourselves, only by fighting poverty together will we prosper,” he said.
  • The Prime Minister said India’s scientists have created 131 types of high-yielding variety seeds so that output can be maximised.
  • “In the last few days the way the people of Balochistan, Gilgit, from Pak occupied Kashmir have thanked me, it is the honour of 1.25 billion people of India. I thank those people from Balochistan, Gilgit and Pak occupied Kashmir”, the PM said.

2017: Pitched for cash-less economy after demonetisation

  • “No law was passed for those having Benami property for years. However after the recent passage of the Benami Act, within a short span of time, government has confiscated Benami property worth Rs. 800 crores when these things happen, common men feel that this country is for the honest people”, PM said.
  • “People would be the driving force behind the establishment, rather than the other way around – Tantra se Lok nahin, Lok se tantra chalega,” PM Modi said.
  • Our uniformed forces have achieved the pinnacle of sacrifice in fighting left-wing extremism, terrorism, infiltration and elements disturbing peace. The world had to recognise the strength of India and it clout in the surgical strike. One rank, One Pension policy has boosted the morale of our security forces, the PM said.

2018: PM hailed introduction of GST

  • For the period of 70 years, indirect tax officials were able to mobilize 70 lakhs of revenue. Whereas by implementation of GST, within a year we were able to mobilize 16 lakhs of revenue, said the PM.
  • Upto 2013, for the past 70 years the direct tax payers were only 4 crore people. Now the numbers has doubled and grown to 7.25 crores, he said.
  • PM Modi announced the date of the launch of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan — September 25, which is the anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. The landmark scheme provides a cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.
  • In another key move, PM Modi announced that women officers of the Short Service Commission in the Indian Armed Forces would be eligible for permanent commission.
  • There was a time when the world used to talk of “Red Tape”. However, today the issue of “Red Carpet” is being discussed. We have reached 100th position in the ‘ease of doing business’ ranking. Today, the entire world is looking at our achievement with pride, said the PM.

2019: PM Modi spoke on ‘population explosion’

  • The new govt has not completed even 10 weeks, but in this short span of time in every sector we have taken important steps. Article 370 and 35A being revoked is a step towards realizing the dream of Sardar Patel, PM Modi said in his first speech after being elected PM for the second time.
  • If we can take steps against the ‘Sati’ custom, female foeticide and dowry, then why not against instant triple talaq. Scrapping of triple talaq will help Muslim women live a better life. The decision should not be seen through a political prism, he said.
  • There is one issue I want to highlight today- population explosion. We have to think- can we do justice to the aspirations of our children? There is a need to have greater discussion and awareness on population explosion, the PM said.
  • “In line with his ‘clean India’ initiative, PM Modi said the country will become open defecation-free. “I had flagged the issue of Swachhata from the ramparts of Red Fort in 2014 and a few weeks from now on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, India will become an open defecation-free nation,” he said.
  • “Can we free India from single use plastic? The time for implementing such an idea has come. May teams be mobilised to work in this direction. Let a significant step be made on 2nd October,” he Modi added.

2020: PM praised corona warriors

  • “We are passing through an extraordinary situation. Today, children- the bright future of India- are not in front of me. Why? It is because Corona has stopped everyone. In this period of Corona, I salute millions of Corona warriors- doctors, nurses, sanitation workers, ambulance drivers and so on-who all should I count,” said PM Modi.
  • The PM expressed condolences to all families who lost their loved ones due to Covid-19. “I believe the indomitable will power and determination of 130 crore countrymen will make us win over Corona,” said PM Modi.
  • PM Modi announced the launch of the National Digital Health Mission. Through the mission, every Indian will be given a Health ID. This Health ID will work like a Health Account for every Indian.
  • PM Modi said his government had decided that within 1000 days, it will complete the work of connecting villages with optical fibre.
  • Prime Minister announced a major push to the infrastructure sector. He said the government is prioritizing infrastructure for faster development with the help of the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) project. Over Rs.110 lakh crore would be invested in the NIP.

2021: Introduced about mission ‘Gati Shakti’

  • Faced with supply disruptions during the pandemic, PM Modi called for a greater need for adopting a holistic and integrated approach to infrastructure construction.
  • Against that backdrop, PM Modi announced will soon launch the National Master Plan or “Gati Shakti”. “This scheme of more than 100 lakh crores rupees will result in new employment opportunities for lakhs of youth,” he said.
  • In the fight against malnutrition and to provide better nutrition to the poor, PM Modi decided that the government will distribute fortified rice.
  • He announced the National Hydrogen Mission aimed at making India a global hub for Green Hydrogen production and export.

2022: Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

  • PM Modi said that Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is being celebrated with the campaign to build 75 Amrit Sarovars in every district. “People from every village are joining the campaign and offering their services. With their own efforts, the people are running a massive campaign for water conservation in their respective villages,” he said.
  • PM Modi announced that 75 Vande Bharat trains, which are indigenous semi-high speed rials, will connect different parts of the country in 75 weeks.
  • The Prime Minister said people must focus their attention on the “Panch Pran” for the coming 25 years. He spelt out Panch Pran of Amrit Kaal- “the goal of developed India, to remove any trace of the colonial mindset, taking pride in our roots, unity and sense of duty among citizens”.
  • Providing electricity connections to 2.5 crore people in such a short time was not a small task, but the country has done it. today the country is rapidly providing ‘water from tap’ to the homes of lakhs of families. Freedom from open defecation has become possible in India today.

One of the dreams of slef-reliant India is to ensure that India does not lag behind in fulfilling the needs of the world. 2023: Developed India by 2047

  • Addressing his last Independence Day speech of his second term, PM Modi said that he was confident that in 2047 when India marks 100 years of its independence, it will be a developed nation.
  • It is “Modi’s guarantee” that India will become 3rd largest global economy in the next five years, he asserted.
  • India is feeling a sense of security now; serial bomb blasts a thing of past; terror attacks, and incidents in Naxalism-hit areas are curbed, the PM said.
  • “Path for solution in Manipur will be found through peace. The Centre is making all efforts for a solution and will continue to do so,” PM Modi said.
  • Corruption has badly affected India’s capability; it is Modi’s life-long commitment to keep fighting against corruption, the PM said.
  • In five years, over 13.5 crore poor people came out of poverty to become part of neo-middle, middle classes, the PM claimed.
