Gangster Harshad Patankar’s celebratory procession post release lands him back in jail

NASHIK: A criminal taking out a celebratory procession, with his supporters, for release from prison was rearrested on Thursday, albeit in another case, cutting short his freedom and show of strength.
The accused, Harshad Patankar, was lodged in Nashik Road central jail for the past one year. According to police, he was involved in many criminal cases, including body offences.He was also terrorising the local following which the police decided to take preventive action agaisnt him under the MPDA.
After securing his release from the jail on Tuesday, Patankar took part in a procession which violated the prohibitory orders issued by the police. The procession took place from Bethelnagar to Ambedkar Chowk from 3pm to 3.30pm.
An officer from the Sarkarwada police, said Patankar and seven others used a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) along with 15 two-wheelers for the procession. A large number of their associates joined the procession gradually. They also raised slogans and resorted to non-stop honking.
“A case has been registered against Patankar and his 30 associates under section 189(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for unlawful assembly. When Patankar realised that he was about to get arrested, he fled the scene with an associate. They were later detained on Thursday in Dhruvnagar area of the city,” the officer said.
“We have also issued notices to the other accused in this case as asked them to present them in the police station,” the officer added.
The case in which Patankar has now been arrested dates back to 2021 where he was booked for attempt to murder and sections of Indian Arms Act were also imposed on him.
Nitin Thete, police naik of Sarkarwada police station, said the non bailable warrant was already issued against Patankar.
“When the procession came to our notice, we also got to know about the non-bailable warrant against him. Accordingly, he was traced and arrested,” Thete added.
