NEW DELHI: Govt on Sunday dropped the two bills on one nation, one election (ONOE)from its revised list of business for Monday in Lok Sabha. Sources later said the two important bills will be introduced in the Lower House by law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday.
The two bills – Constitution 129th Amendment Bill and UTs Law Amendment Bill – were earlier listed for tabling in LS on Monday.
The revised list of business, however, dropped them and instead Readjustment of Representation of STs in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill was listed against Meghwal’s name. Sources cited the absence of home minister Amit Shah, who is on a two-day trip to Chhattisgarh, for the one nation, one election bills being deferred. Shah is likely to be present in LS on Tuesday.
Govt has important legislative businesses listed for Monday with supplementary demands for grants and Appropriation Bill scheduled. Rajya Sabha will begin a discussion on the Constitution the same day.
After the two ONOE bills, cleared by cabinet on Thursday, are tabled in Lok Sabha, they are likely to be referred to a joint parliamentary committee to build a wider consensus given that govt lacks two-thirds majority required for passage of the bills.
