INDORE: The gunmen who shot dead Dr Sunil Sahu at his clinic on Friday night had taken an appointment with him on the pretext of cold and cough, police said on Saturday. But there is no clue yet to who killed him, and why.
Police have set up four teams to look for the gunmen, said additional DCP Alok Sharma. “While one team is looking at CCTV footage, the second is conducting cyber analysis. A third team has been sent to Guna and Gwalior for investigations, and the fourth is questioning some suspects,” he said.
A car in which the suspects seen after committing the crime is being tracked, said Sharma. ACP Rubina Mizvani said police also checked with the hospital where the victim, 28-year-old Sunil Sahu worked, but got no significant leads.
Sahu rented the clinic space about two and a half months ago.
Doctor was liked by patients for his ‘kind nature’, say police
Police say he was liked by patients for his ‘kind nature’ and usually attended the clinic in the evening. On Friday, he received a call at 7.30pm informing him that a patient would visit around 9.30pm. He arrived at the clinic, not realizing it was a trap.
Three assailants entered the clinic around 10.45pm, and shot him at point-blank range. The phone number used to make the call belonged to a labourer who said that two men borrowed his phone on some pretext.
Sahu hailed from Kumbhraj in Guna district. His father, Jagdish Prasad Sahu, a small-scale chilli trader, is shattered. “I worked hard to educate my son and make him a doctor. Now he is gone, and I have nothing left,” he said.
His mother, two sisters, and wife Sonali, whom he married just a year and a half ago, are struggling to cope with the loss. None of them has a clue to why he was murdered. Police say Sahu had no known disputes, and no clear enemies yet.
The killing sparked outrage in the medical community. Members of the Ideal Cure Association gathered at the district hospital and then at MY Hospital to mourn, and demand justice.
They planned to hold a demonstration with the body but relented after being persuaded by officials.
They submitted a memorandum calling for the immediate arrest of the killers, compensation of Rs 1 crore to Sahu’s family, monthly assistance of Rs 20,000 for his father, and support for his young widow.
