The scam attempt
The scammer posed as a representative from HDFC Bank, attempting to deceive Sharan into updating his PAN details through a fraudulent link.Instead of falling for the trap, Sharan, with his tech-savvy background, decided to play along humorously.
The counter-offer
Sharan proposed to the scammer that he could redesign their fake website to look more convincing for a fee of Rs 20,000. He wrote, “Easy to find it is a scamming website. I am a software engineer, I can help you redesign the page. For 20K, I will help you redesign exactly like the HDFC net banking site.”
Scammer’s response
Surprisingly, the scammer responded, asking for a sample of the redesigned site via WhatsApp. This interaction, shared by Sharan on social media platform X with the caption, “Lesson: Never mess with a developer,” quickly went viral.
Public reaction
The online community responded with laughter and admiration for Sharan’s cleverness. However, the incident also sparked a debate about the ethics of engaging with scammers and whether protecting the scammer’s phone number was necessary. Additionally, some pointed out that similar screenshots had been seen before, questioning the originality of the exchange.
