Happy Dhanteras 2024: Date, time, puja vidhi, mantra and shubh muharat to buy gold, silver and auspicious items

Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival in India. It is an auspicious day, known as Dhantrayodashi, which falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. “Dhan” means wealth, and “Teras” signifies the thirteenth day, symbolizing prosperity and health.
On Dhanteras, people clean and decorate their homes, and many buy gold, silver, or utensils because it is believed to bring good fortune and wealth. Devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, for good health. Dhanteras also honors Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, inviting prosperity into homes and businesses.
In the evening, diyas lit with oil illuminate homes, rangolis on entrance are made to attract auspicious energy; families gather for prayer, gift exchange, reminiscence of health and riches so make Dhanteras a festival of prosperity and bliss.
Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, is rooted in several folktales celebrating prosperity and health. A popular story involves King Hima’s son, who was foretold to die on his wedding day. His bride, determined to save him, illuminated their home with lamps and gold jewelry to keep Lord Yama, the god of death, distracted with the dazzling light. Yama was so mesmerized that he missed his time to claim her husband’s soul, thus sparing his life. Another tale links Dhanteras to Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, who emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan, bringing divine nectar and Ayurveda’s healing knowledge.

Dhanteras 2024 puja vidhi

The Dhanteras puja is an important ritual symbolizing wealth and health. It traditionally begins with thoroughly cleaning the home to create a welcoming space for Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of health. This ritual cleansing is believed to invite positive energy and good fortune.
To perform the puja, place a small altar in a clean area, usually in the east or northeast direction. Arrange idols or images of Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi, along with new items like gold, silver, or utensils purchased for Dhanteras. Begin by lighting a diya (oil lamp) with sesame or mustard oil, symbolizing the removal of negative energies. Offer fresh flowers, incense, and kumkum to the deities.
A common mantra for invoking Lakshmi’s blessings is “ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं कुबेराय अष्ट-लक्ष्मी मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः॥” After the prayer, families offer sweets and prasad to the gods. A small diya is placed at the entrance of the home and near the tulsi (holy basil) plant to guard against misfortune. Conclude by sharing prasad among family members, marking the occasion with a shared wish for health, wealth, and harmony in the coming year.

Dhanteras 2024 mantra

ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं कुबेराय अष्ट-लक्ष्मी मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः॥
The mantra “ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं कुबेराय अष्ट-लक्ष्मी मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः” is a powerful invocation for attracting wealth and prosperity. It combines the energies of Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, and the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi (Ashta Lakshmi), who represent different aspects of prosperity and abundance.
“ॐ (Om)”: The universal sound, invoking divine energy and cosmic consciousness.
“ह्रीं (Hreem)”: This bija (seed) mantra is associated with Goddess Mahalakshmi, representing power, wealth, and material energy.
“श्रीं (Shreem)”: Another bija mantra symbolizing prosperity, peace, and abundance, and invoking Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings.
“क्रीं (Kreem)”: Represents transformative energy, helping remove obstacles and enabling the flow of wealth.
“कुबेराय (Kuberaya)”: Invokes Lord Kubera, the guardian of wealth, known to grant financial abundance.
“अष्ट-लक्ष्मी (Ashta-Lakshmi)”: The eight forms of Lakshmi, each embodying different wealth aspects, like material wealth, knowledge, courage, and success.
The phrase “मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः” translates to “May my home be filled with wealth.” This mantra is essentially a prayer requesting Kubera and Ashta Lakshmi to bless the devotee’s home with prosperity, abundance, and happiness, creating a life of financial stability and success.
