The Rania assembly seat in Sirsa district, now contested by Kamboj, was previously represented by Haryana energy and jails minister Ranjit Chautala when he was an Independent MLA. Chautala recently quit the BJP after being denied a ticket and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls from Hisar.
The Congress had engaged in seat-sharing talks with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Haryana polls, but the negotiations reached a deadlock due to hard bargaining from both sides. Since then, AAP has released its own lists of candidates.
In its initial lists, the Congress renominated all its 28 MLAs and fielded prominent candidates such as former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, state unit chief Udai Bhan from Hodal, and wrestler Vinesh Phogat from Julana. The party also nominated Mewa Singh from Ladwa to challenge chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The Haryana assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with the counting of votes set to take place on October 8.
