The defending champions Mumbai City FC have had a subdued start to the ISL 2024-25 season. It might have prolonged, but The Islanders finally returned to winning ways when they held on to their 2-1 lead against FC Goa recently. It was a collective effort, where MCFC’s import from Goa, Brandon Fernandes also chipped in with a valuable contribution.
Much like with his feet, the midfielder was also verbally expressive when he engaged in a brief conversation with Republic World. Fernandes gracefully answered all the queries posed by Republic during the one-to-one and shared intriguing insights about his transfer to Mumbai City FC.
Here are the excerpts from the conversation:
On Acclimatizing to the Mumbai City FC Setup
It didn’t feel like a new team for me. I knew most of the players here, so it wasn’t difficult. The vibe has been very good; everyone is friendly and welcoming. It feels great to be here.
Motivation Behind the Move
In life, we have to face challenges. When Mumbai City approached me to discuss their project and vision, it was an easy decision. Mumbai City is one of the top clubs in India, having been successful in recent years and winning many trophies. Joining them, I felt, would uplift my game, and it’s an exciting opportunity to be part of such a prestigious club.

Leaving FC Goal—An Emotional Decision?
Absolutely! I spent seven years there, and it’s tough to leave after being with one club for so long. However, as a footballer, you have to be prepared for change. This is a reality in any sport, and it’s something you need to account for and grow from.
About My Previous Stint With Mumbai City
The previous season was very short, so even a minor injury could keep you out for a long time. Now that I’m back with the club, they’ve shown me so much faith and trust, and it’s time for me to repay that.
Competitive Nature in the Squad
We have a team capable of competing, and I’m confident we will do well. We have strengths in all positions and healthy competition among ourselves. Everyone is working hard in training, and this competition will help us grow as a team. To have a successful season, we need to stick together, and I’m sure we will achieve that by the end of the season.

On Playing Under Petr Kratky
Every coach is different, with their own ways of working. Petr has been very friendly and motivating. He’s open to communication; if we have anything to discuss, we can approach him easily. As a coach, he demands a lot, always pushing us to improve.
My Role at MCFC
My role is straightforward. I play as a midfielder, aiming to assist, score goals, and contribute my best on the pitch. He has given me the freedom to express myself.
How Do You See the New Era of Indian Football Shaping Up?
In my opinion, we shouldn’t think too much about the future. We need to take it step by step. If we focus too much on what lies ahead, we might get overwhelmed. It’s essential to approach things gradually.
