GUWAHATI: Central intelligence agencies have issued stringent alerts to northeastern states regarding the clandestine activities of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and its affiliated organizations.
A high-ranking official from the state intelligence wing confirmed that all central and state intelligence agencies have intensified their surveillance across demographically diverse, border-adjacent, and susceptible regions.
Bangladesh-based terror outfits persistently target Assam and Tripura for territorial expansion, influenced by geopolitical and demographic factors. However, their strategic initiatives have consistently been neutralized by vigilant Indian agencies during preliminary stages.
The official said, “Recent regime transitions in Bangladesh and the release of certain JMB leaders from incarceration necessitated heightened alertness. Border-adjacent zones have been placed under enhanced surveillance.”
Assam Police’s recent operations resulted in numerous arrests of suspected operatives allegedly linked to Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
Throughout 2022, Assam Police apprehended approximately 46 Jihadi operatives and dismantled five modules of the terror outfit.
Intelligence sources said central agencies have alerted their West Bengal counterparts about JMB activities. Following Bangladesh’s unrest in June-July, Border Security Force (BSF) strengthened monitoring along the 4,096 km international boundary to prevent illicit cross-border activities.
Five Indian states share borders with Bangladesh: West Bengal (2216 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km).
Recent months witnessed the arrest of over 450 Bangladeshi nationals and 60 Rohingya by various security forces in Tripura. Assam authorities intercepted approximately 140 infiltrators and facilitated their return to Bangladesh.
Himanta Biswa Sarma recently emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts among border states and BSF to combat infiltration effectively. He highlighted that recent data indicates predominantly Rohingya Muslim infiltration attempts, contrary to earlier assumptions about Hindu migration from Bangladesh.
Sarma stressed the importance of synchronized operations between state governments and BSF, warning that inadequate vigilance could lead to deteriorating situations. He reiterated that their approach remains unbiased regarding religious identity, focusing solely on detecting and addressing illegal entry.
