High court nixes PIL seeking separate flag for Karnataka

BENGALURU: The high court dismissed a PIL seeking a separate flag for the state.
Bhimappa Gundappa Gadad, a social activist from Belagavi, had sought for a direction to the state govt to consider the representations submitted by him on Sept 18, 2023 and Oct 16, 2023, and pass a reasoned order.
According to him, a nine-member expert committee was constituted based on his representations, and the same had favoured that Karnataka should have its own flag.
However, dismissing the petition, a division bench of Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind observed that matters and grievances of such nature could hardly fall within the court’s jurisdiction, much less in the realm of public interest jurisdiction to be exercised by the court.
“The public interest petition is thoroughly misconceived and is dismissed,” the bench observed.
