KULLU: The four remaining Malana hydroelectricity project employees were rescued from the dam’s tunnel after more than 35 hours on Friday, when two more bodies were recovered and 47 people, including schoolchildren, reported to be still missing in Himachal Pradesh.
Of the 33 stranded people that included locals, staffers, and stage-1 workers, 29 were saved on Thursday.A massive flash flood on Wednesday had trapped them in the tunnel after a side wall of the dam had collapsed.

8 school students missing

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police on Friday crossed the rivulet with ropes to rescue the four remaining workers – Saurabh Sharma, Vijay Kumar, Vishal, and Dola Singh.
The death toll reached six on Friday when the continued search at Nirmand (Kullu), Rampur (Shimla), and Thalukot (Mandi) across three districts yielded two more bodies.
The four taken out dead on Thursday from the flood’s debris near Terang village of Mandi district’s Padhar subdivision included two children, Aman (9) and Aryan (8). Mandi’s deputy commissioner, Apoorv Devgan, said a search was on for five more people.
Another hunt is on at Kullu district’s Samej village area near Jhakri in Shimla district’s Rampur subdivision, where eight schoolchildren are among 33 people missing since Thursday.
Kullu’s DC, Torul S Ravish, said aid had reached Samej, which is on the border of Shimla district. He said 15 families from that village will get an interim relief of Rs 1.5 lakh each.
The DC said: “We will shift the damaged primary and secondary schools temporarily to the nearest safe govt buildings. The flood has affected 100 students.” Ravish on Friday visited the village with a team.
At Jaon village of Kullu district’s Nirmand area, search is on for nine people since the night between Wednesday and Thursday when four cloudbursts had triggered flash floods that had struck Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts.
After a raging Beas eroded many stretches of the highway between Kullu and Manali on Thursday morning, all traffic on the Chandigarh-Manali national highway was diverted from Raison village in Kullu district via a link road on the river’s left bank. The national highway section near Pandoh in Mandi district reopened on Thursday.
