HYDERABAD: A 25-year-old woman, who was engaged in surrogacy by a childless couple, died by falling from the 9th floor of My Home Bhooja, Raidurgam. Police are probing whether it was an attempt to escape that turned fatal or if it is a case of suicide.
Though this incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, it came to light on Wednesday. Raidurgam police said that real estate businessman Rajesh Babu and his wife took the service of Ashritha Singh, a resident of Odisha, to be a surrogate mother. Ashritha and her husband, Sanjay Singh, were given accommodation at the residence of Rajesh’s apartment in My Home Bhooja for nearly the last month.
“On Monday late in the night, Ashritha died by falling from the 9th floor. How she died is still being probed. She died by falling from the balcony. She was not pregnant, and her treatment was stated to start next month,” Raidurgam Sub-Inspector V Srinivas told TOI.
Officials said that there is a mystery behind how she died. From the balcony where she died, police found two sarees and a chunni tied to each other and hanging loose by being tied to a rod of the balcony’s railing.
“Ashritha was given a bedroom for her stay while her husband was asked to stay in the servant room. There are two possibilities in this case. One, to escape from the flat, she might have tried to come down from the 9th floor of the balcony using a saree to land herself on a concrete structure at the 7th floor. This attempt must have turned fatal. The other possibility is suicide,” police said. At this height, there was no CCTV coverage.
However, Sanjay Singh, in his complaint to the police, accused Rajesh of abetting her to take the extreme step since the latter allegedly tried to abuse her. “Sanjay was giving inconsistent statements. He claimed that his wife told him in the past that the accused attempted to abuse her in the flat. But we have to probe further to ascertain the credibility of this allegation. At the same time, the complainant also said that Ashritha earlier showed suicidal tendencies by expressing a desire to die by suicide as she was not interested in life,” Srinivas said. A case was registered on the charge of abetment to commit suicide against Rajesh.
